An overhead storage rack can double your storage space in the garage, all without taking up any real estate on the floor. Installation of a new rack system begins with a bit of planning.
1. Garage Finishing
An initial assessment of the garage is necessary before choosing a storage system or installing it. Begin by assessing the location of studs and nailing surfaces in the ceilings and walls where you intend to install the storage rack. If there aren't sufficient nailing supports, then some must be added before you move ahead with the installation.
For those planning to finish out an unfinished garage wall or ceiling, this is best done before the racks are installed so they aren't in the way. Take the time to mark the location of studs and nailing surfaces on the new drywall, using chalk or pencil. These marks will save time that would otherwise be spent searching for studs during rack installation.
2. System Choices
There are different overhead rack storage systems to choose from. The most simple system is a basic rack that is designed to hold things set upon it, such as storage tubs. There are general-purpose racks that you use with your own boxes and tubs, or you can purchase an entire system that features storage tubs designed to fit with the system in a way to maximize storage space.
A slide rack system is another choice. These are designed as rails. Special storage containers fit into the rails so that they can slide in and out. You can't use your own containers or boxes with these systems, as they won't fit the rails. The main benefit is that the slide racks are designed to use every inch of ceiling space without waste.
3. Layout Planning
The fun part of planning the layout comes after preparing the garage and choosing the type of system. Basic rack systems can be configured into any shape or width, making them easy to fit the available space. Slide racks come in pre-set widths but the length can be customized to fit your garage.
Make sure to plan the layout so that items on the racks can be accessed easily. For example, putting up the racks in aisles allows access from either side. Another option is to install the racks around the wall perimeter so that access from one side of the rack is guaranteed. Also, keep in mind if you will be adding hanging storage to the racks, such as bike hooks, so you can determine the best place to add these.
